NEW HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team refused to let this one slip away. The Golden Knights used an 18-4 run midway through the second half to put away Southern Connecticut State University 86-75 Saturday at Moore Field House. Saint Rose thus avenged an 85-83 setback in Albany on December 4 when they allowed a 22-point second half lead to evaporate.
Junior guard
Shea Bromirski scored 26 points to lead four players in double-figures for the Golden Knights (19-7/14-7 NE-10), who extended their winning streak to six games. Junior guard
Rob Gutierrez and sophomore guard
Andre Pope added 16 and 15 points respectively. Meanwhile, junior forward
Brian Hanuschak recorded his sixth “double-double” of the year with 14 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
Freshman guard Greg Langston led the Owls with 18 points. Junior forward Kieran Ramsey and sophomore forward Trevon Hamlet tossed in 14 points apiece.
Saint Rose was clinging to a one point, 53-52 edge with 12:02 left when Bromirski drained a deep 3-pointer to key the decisive spurt. He completed it with a pair of free throws and yet another deep ball that put the Golden Knights in command, 71-56, with 8:26 on the clock. Saint Rose never trailed again.
Southern Connecticut (12-13/9-12 NE-10) got back to within nine, 77-68, when Langston buried a trey of his own at the 4:00 mark. The Golden Knights continued their clutch free throw shooting down the stretch by converting 7-of-10 attempts the rest of the way before Hanuschak's slam in the waning moments put the final punctuation on the victory.
Saint Rose furthermore helped its cause by limiting the Owls to just 25.7 percent (9-for-36) shooting from long distance in the game. The Golden Knights have now opened the month of February with six straight wins for the second year in a row.
Both teams are scheduled to conclude their 2010-11 regular-season slates on Wednesday night with a pair of 7:30 pm Northeast-10 Conference games on tap. Saint Rose will host upstate rival Le Moyne College, while Southern Connecticut heads to Assumption College.
