NEW HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team shot a season-high 63.4 percent (26-for-41) from the floor and the Golden Knights took command midway through the first half to beat Southern Connecticut State University 79-66 Saturday at Moore Field House. Saint Rose maintained its stronghold on fourth place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings and extended its season-long win streak to five games.
Senior guard
Lynsey Timbrouck tied her career-high with 21 points to lead the Golden Knights (19-6/15-6 NE-10). Junior guards
Ola Shajuyigbe and
Ashley Rath added 16 and 14 points after combining on a 5-for-7 effort from the arc, while senior forward
Amy Voelkel tied her career-best with 15 boards to go along with nine points and four assists.
Senior center Shelley Pierson scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace the Owls (11-15/7-14 NE-10).
Saint Rose assumed control when junior forward
Jessica Walton broke open a 13-12 ballgame with back-to-back buckets that keyed a 15-5 run at the 12:50 mark. Walton later added a conventional three-point play and Voelkel drained a 3-pointer that put the Golden Knights up 11, 28-17, with 7:03 until intermission.
Saint Rose methodically built a 17 point, 44-27 advantage after Timbrouck knocked down four consecutive free throws in the final minute. Southern Connecticut sophomore guard Camille Fantini gave the Owls a boost with a 'three' just before the break. That did little to overshadow a dominant shooting performance by the Golden Knights, who scored a season-high 44 first half points after burying 71.4 percent (15-for-21) of their field goal opportunities.
The Owls were trying to keep their postseason hopes alive, but shot just 38.8 percent (26-for-67) for the game. That helped Saint Rose maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way en route to its fourth 19-win campaign in six years.
Both squads are scheduled to conclude their regular-season league slates on Wednesday night. The Golden Knights are set to host upstate rival Le Moyne College, while Southern Connecticut has the difficult task of heading to Assumption College. Both contests are set to tip-off at 5:30 pm.
