ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team remained perfect during the month of February (5-0) and in the process earned the 700th win in program history behind an 84-73 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the University of New Haven tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights furthermore earned their 150th regular-season league triumph and extended their winning streak to five games, the longest such span in the NE-10.
Saint Rose (18-7/13-7 NE-10) used a 13-2 run late in the first half to break open a two point, 25-23, ballgame at the 6:39 mark. Junior guard
Rob Gutierrez keyed the outburst with a conventional 3-point play. Gutierrez and junior forward
Brian Hanuschak then combined for 10 unanswered points to put the Golden Knights up 13, 38-25. Hanuschak made a layup as he was fouled, converted the free throw and then tipped home a missed layup to cap things off.
The lead ballooned to 21 points, 63-42, midway through the second half after Gutierrez hit three layups in a row. Freshman guard
Kareem Thomas then added one of his own to put Saint Rose in the driver's seat.
The Chargers (7-17/5-15 NE-10) refused to go quietly. Senior forward Robert Jamerson sparked a 7-0 run late that got New Haven back to within 10, 78-68, with just more than a minute to play. The Golden Knights proved their mettle once again down the stretch by knocking down all four of their free throw attempts to put things away.
Four Saint Rose players reached double-figures in scoring for the 12th time this year. Gutierrez fell one shy of his career-high with 26 points. Junior guard
Andre Pope filled up the box score with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists; while Hanuschak and junior guard
Shea Bromirski added 13 and 11 points respectively.
Jamerson poured in 31 points and grabbed nine boards to pace the Chargers. Freshman guards Jeffrey Adkins, Jr. and Justin Exum contributed 17 and 16 points as well.
Both squads have a pair of league games on the road at 3:30 pm Saturday. The Golden Knights head to Southern Connecticut State University, while New Haven travels to Pace University.
