SAINT ROSE HAS FOUR-GAME WIN STREAK SNAPPED AT UMASS LOWELL

Junior guard Shea Bromirski today became only the 24th player in Saint Rose men's basketball annals to record 1,000 points.
LOWELL, MA – The College of Saint Rose had its four-game win streak snapped with a 92-82 setback at Northeast-10 Conference rival UMass Lowell this afternoon.

The game featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes although the Golden Knights (13-5/8-5 NE-10) were hurt by 23 turnovers that resulted in 32 points for the River Hawks (11-6/7-6 NE-10), who have now upended Saint Rose nine times in 10 previous meetings at their own Costello Athletic Center.

Junior guards Rob Gutierrez and Shea Bromirski had notable performances for the Golden Knights. Gutierrez led the Saint Rose scoring parade for a team-leading eighth time this year by tying his career-high of 27 points. He also had career-bests of five assists and five steals. Bromirski tossed in 18 points of his own and in the process became only the 24th player in school annals to ascend the 1,000 point plateau (1,011).

UMass Lowell broke open a tight game by outscoring its guests by an 18-7 margin throughout the final five minutes. The Golden Knights were limited to only one field goal during that spurt, a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Andre Pope in the final 30 seconds when the outcome was all but decided.

Sophomore forward Romeo Diaz canned two free throws to put UMass Lowell ahead for good, 76-75, with 3:33 remaining. Layups by freshman wing Antonio Bivins and freshman guard Akeem Williams made it a five point ballgame, 80-75, a minute later. Gutierrez then brought the Golden Knights back to within three thanks to a pair of free throws, but UMass Lowell sandwiched two buckets around a Saint Rose miscue and thus led by no less than five points the rest of the way.

Pope contributed 15 points, three assists and a pair of steals; and junior forward Brian Hanuschak finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, along with career-highs of four assists and six blocks for the Golden Knights.

UMass Lowell meanwhile received 55 points from its bench. Williams led the way with 20 points, freshman forward Darrell Ward had 16 points and nine rebounds; and Bivins added a dozen to lead the charge. The starting backcourt of junior Robbie Walton and sophomore Matt Welch combined for 25 points, 10 assists and seven steals.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home Wednesday to host 24th ranked and league leader Bentley. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 7:30 pm following the women's 5:30 pm encounter. UMass Lowell gets back on the hardwood Tuesday for a 7:30 pm meeting at conference rival Pace University in Pleasantville, NY.
