SPRINGFIELD, MA – American International College scored the final 10 points of the game as the host Yellow Jackets handed The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team a 36-34 Northeast-10 Conference setback today at Butova Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (8-3/4-3 NE-10) had their season-long four-game win streak snapped, while American International has now won four in a row itself.
Nothing came easy for either side throughout today's contest. The Yellow Jackets (9-2/6-1 NE-10), who upended Division I Rhode Island in overtime two weeks ago, entered the game shooting 41.4 percent from beyond the arc, tops in the NE-10. The two squads combined to go 4-for-26 from international waters this afternoon, but American International held a 13-6 edge in second chance points after outrebounding Saint Rose by a 53-41 margin which proved to be a decisive factor.
The Golden Knights found themselves down two, 26-24, with 10:28 left but junior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe spurred a 10-0 Saint Rose run with back-to-back buckets. Senior guard
Lynsey Timbrouck fed junior guard
Ashley Rath in the paint to cap things and the Golden Knights seized control by eight, 34-26, with 6:02 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets responded by holding Saint Rose without a field goal the rest of the way and ending the contest with a 10-0 run of their own. Junior forward Rhea Pascal gave American International the lead for good following a layup with 1:30 to go.
Saint Rose had one final possession, but Timbrouck's jumper with five seconds left was off the mark and the Yellow Jackets secured the board.
Shajuyigbe led the Golden Knights with nine points, while Timbrouck added six points, a season-high 14 rebounds, and six assists.
Pascal and senior guard Adriana Johnson each had 10 points to pace American International.
Both squads return to action Wednesday night with a pair of league games on tap. Saint Rose heads to Saint Michael's College, while American International travels to Merrimack College. Both games are scheduled for a 5:30 pm tip-off.
