ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose got its 2010 campaign off on a high note with a 1-0 non-conference victory versus Concordia (NY) tonight. It marked the first Saint Rose men's soccer game played at the Dr. R. Mark and Kathleen Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Senior midfielder
Liam Barrett provided the game-winner with an historic beautiful marker with five minutes remaining in regulation. Barrett gathered a ball from 30-yards out at the center of the field and let go a volley that sailed just under the left-side crossbar. The Golden Knights then wound the clock down in what had been a fairly evenly played match until that juncture.
Saint Rose (1-0-0) generated a 14-9 shot advantage, including a 9-5 differential of on-target threats, and engineered five corner kicks, while yielding only three. Junior keeper
Patrik Ohlsson made five saves en route to his fourth career clean sheet. Freshman keeper Marco DiNello came up with seven saves for the Clippers (0-1-1).
Concordia nearly put a quick end to the celebratory evening for the Golden Knights when junior forward Richard Heredia created space for himself inside the right quadrant of the box and fired a hard shot that forced Ohlsson to make a nifty diving save to his right. However, that proved to be the most dangerous threat for Concordia all evening.
On the other side, Saint Rose sophomore forward
Giancarlo Montenegro nearly struck in the final four minutes of the opening period when flicked loose ball that flew just over the crossbar. He nearly scored again in the opening stages of the second period when his shot forced DiNello to be on his toes.
The game swung both ways throughout the ensuing 35 minutes and had all the inevitable makings of overtime, but Barrett's late strike removed most of the doubt about the game's eventual outcome.
Up next, the Golden Knights open the Northeast-10 Conference portion of their schedule Tuesday with a 4:00 pm date at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, VT. Meanwhile, Concordia has a 5:30 pm non-league date at Saint Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday.
