GOLDEN KNIGHTS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT IN NE-10 OPENER

Sophomore defensive specialist Laura Falkowitz chipped in with nine digs to help Saint Rose win its NE-10 opener
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team commenced its 2010 Northeast-10 Conference schedule tonight with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-14) victory over visiting Assumption College at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. It marked the Golden Knights' ninth win in a row against the Greyhounds, who dropped their fifth straight in the process.

A pair of hitters reached double-figures in kills for Saint Rose (3-8/1-0 NE-10). Junior outside hitter Sarah Kahrs registered 13 kills to lead all players, while sophomore outside hitter Kayleigh Quinn had a season-high 11 kills and hit .474 in her first start of the year.

Junior setter Theresa Staulo distributed the ball evenly throughout the night as five Golden Knights finished with at least five kills. Staulo handed out 39 assists and collected three digs and a like number of blocks. Additionally, freshman middle hitter Alex Gagliano finished with a season-high nine kills and freshman libero Christina Strezenec produced 14 digs.

Assumption (6-10/0-2 NE-10) received eight kills from freshman middle hitter Kelly Mc Connell. Meanwhile, sophomore libero Steph Whooten led the defense with 17 digs and freshman setter Jess Reimers wound up with 19 assists and eight digs.

After Saint Rose dropped the opening set 25-22, the Golden Knights managed to come away with a slim 25-23 edge in set two after Kahrs closed things out with a kill. Saint Rose never trailed again the rest of the evening on the strength of an 11-4 run to start the third set and an 18-4 outburst to begin the fourth. An ace by Strezenec capped things in the third, while another ace by Staulo punctuated the final outcome.

The Golden Knights have a pair of tough road matches on tap this weekend beginning Saturday when they head to defending regular-season champion New Haven for a 1:00 pm NE-10 affair in West Haven, CT. Meanwhile, Assumption travels to Pace on Saturday for a 4:00 pm conference match in Pleasantville.
