FLUSHING, NY – Host Queens College broke open a 2-1 ballgame with two strikes just 26 seconds apart en route to a 4-1 non-conference victory over The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team today in Flushing. The Knights (2-4-0) have now won two of their last three, while the Golden Knights (1-4-1) have dropped three in a row.
Queens took a 2-0 lead at the break on a pair of markers within the first 24 minutes of the contest. Senior back Brian Buckmire started the scoring in the 15th minute with a line drive from the top of the penalty box. Junior midfielder Kevin Vazquez found the back of the net less than nine minutes later off a feed from junior midfielder Santiago Bedova.
Saint Rose managed to cut its deficit in half in the 71st minute off a set piece. Senior midfielder
Liam Barrett lofted a free kick into the penalty area and junior forward
Taras Panchishak was there to head home his first goal of the 2010 campaign that made it a 2-1 affair.
The Knights removed all doubt as to the final outcome, however, as junior midfielder Akinyode Dele set up senior forward Jose Aguije with a header of his own off a direct kick at the 79:20 mark. Aguije then got into the act with a tally of his own 26 seconds later and Queens kept the Golden Knights off the board throughout the final 10 minutes of play.
Saint Rose freshman keeper Alexander Parent made 10 saves in his collegiate debut. Junior keeper Demitrious Touros turned aside three shots while collecting his first win of the year for the Knights.
Both clubs return to action this Saturday. The Golden Knights return to Dr. R. Mark and Kathleen Sullivan Field to entertain Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 4:00 pm. Queens picks up its East Coast Conference (ECC) slate at 2:30 pm against St. Thomas Aquinas College.
