ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose used a potent balanced attack that struck both early and late en route to an 8-1 victory against visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne tonight at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights (5-0-0/3-0-0 NE-10), who were recognized as the nation's top-ranked team in Tuesday's
NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA II poll, lived up to their billing by putting seven players in the scoring column and generating a 31-7 shot advantage against the Dolphins (1-2-2/0-2-2).
Freshman midfielder
Sydney Bond registered her third and fourth strikes of the year, while junior midfielder
Christina Cuffari set up three goals and added another herself to lead the Saint Rose attack.
Junior midfielder
Brittany Godin, junior forward Gianna D'Errico and junior midfielder
Derith Fernandes also scored; as did sophomore midfielders
Alayna Shaw and
Lindsay McQuade who collected their first career goals in a Saint Rose uniform.
Godin put Saint Rose on the board in the third minute when she settled a bouncing ball at the top of the box and let go a shot that whistled into the top-right corner. Four minutes later, D'Errico registered the game-winner when she deflected home a low corner kick that Cuffari lined into the area.
Bond made it 3-0 in the 22nd minute, which is where the game stood at the break. Saint Rose then added three more tallies before the Dolphins finally broke through midway through the second half. Junior midfielder Rachel Farneti slipped a pass to the middle of the box that sophomore forward Christie Morano ran onto and one-touched home.
The Golden Knights then closed out the scoring as Shaw and McQuade hustled onto a pair of loose balls near the endline throughout the final 10 minutes.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose is back on the road Saturday for a 6:00 pm league date at Assumption in Worcester, MA. Meanwhile, the Dolphins are scheduled to host NE-10 rival Saint Anselm at 1:00 pm Saturday in Syracuse.
