ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the 2010 campaign this afternoon as the University of New Haven came away with a 4-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Golden Knights at Dr. R. Mark and Kathleen Sullivan Field at the Christian Plumeri Sports Complex.
The Chargers (2-2-1/2-2-0 NE-10) pushed three goals across throughout an 11:18 span in the first period to assume control early. Sophomore forward Joe D'Antonio initially got New Haven on the board when he knocked home a rebound that hit the post following a shot by freshman forward Gui Dos Santos.
New Haven struck again less than four minutes later when junior midfielder Jean Carlos Rafael buried a free kick from 20-yards. His shot ricocheted off a Saint Rose defender and junior keeper
Patrik Ohlsson was thus out of position to turn away the attempt.
Dos Santos then capped the outburst by collecting his team-leading third marker of the year on a breakaway that was set up by freshman back Edwin Carvajal. Sophomore midfielder Andrew Nunez added a late tally in the 77th minute off another set piece that found the far post from the top right corner of the penalty box.
The Golden Knights nearly got one back with seven minutes to play. Senior midfielder
Liam Barrett found himself alone on the penalty hash, but the ensuing shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Ohlsson wound up with five saves in the contest for Saint Rose. The Chargers sent three netminders onto the pitch. Junior Jonathan Creem, who was not forced to make a save, was credited with the win after leaving with a 3-0 lead at intermission.
Both squads return to league action this weekend. The Golden Knights head to Merrimack Saturday for a 1:00 pm kickoff in North Andover, MA. Meanwhile, New Haven is set to host Franklin Pierce at 1:00 Sunday back in West Haven, CT.
