ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team kept its early home unbeaten streak intact tonight as the host Golden Knights played to a 2-2 double-overtime draw versus Mercy College in a non-league affair at Dr. R. Mark and Kathleen Sullivan Field at the Christian Plumeri Sports Complex.
Two players found the back of the net for the first time in their Saint Rose careers, while it was a cagey veteran that set up both markers. Freshman forward
Dylan Klippenstein got the Golden Knights (1-1-1) on the board in the 15th minute and sophomore forward
Giancarlo Montenegro struck just more than 20 minutes later to account for the Saint Rose tallies. Senior midfielder
Liam Barrett assisted on both strikes.
The Mavericks (2-1-2), who kept their four-match unbeaten streak alive, had four different players find the scoring column. Senior midfielder Marko Loncar knotted things with less than 14 minutes to play behind his second goal of the year off a feed from junior back Keith Dillon. Senior forward Raldino Powell headed home a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Daniele Iamiceli to provide the early equalizer.
The match was very evenly played all night, with the Golden Knights coming away with a slim 11-10 edge in shots. Mercy held a 9-4 margin in corner kicks, one of which it converted.
Both keepers were outstanding between the posts throughout 110 minutes. Saint Rose junior keeper
Patrik Ohlsson picked up four saves, but his final stopper helped preserve the draw when he turned aside a one-on-one opportunity with 52 seconds left in the match. Senior keeper Pedro Velazquez-Diaz also recorded four saves for the Mavericks.
Both squads are set to return to action next Wednesday. The Golden Knights are scheduled to host league rival New Haven at 3:30 pm, while Mercy entertains Felician at 3:00 pm.
