ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose posted its third consecutive shutout to start the 2010 campaign and in the process opened the Northeast-10 Conference portion of its schedule on a high note with a key 1-0 victory at UMass Lowell this evening. The Golden Knights, ranked #3 in this week's NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA Division II poll, outshot the River Hawks by a 12-8 margin and put themselves in position to take eight corner kicks, while affording UMass Lowell only one.
Junior forward Gianna D'Errico provided the game's lone goal when she drove home a rebound off the foot of junior midfielder
Christina Cuffari inside the left post in the 32nd minute. Cuffari's initial drive was tipped off the crossbar by freshman keeper Micaela Butlin and into a scramble at her doorstep.
A few minutes later, UMass Lowell nearly broke even when sophomore midfielder Amy Cramer volleyed a loose ball at the top of the box that soared just left of the goal.
In the 65th minute, Saint Rose continued to pressure and nearly doubled its lead when freshman midfielder
Sydney Bond delivered a cross from the right side to junior forward
Kimberly Morton whose side volley went wide left.
Senior keeper
Deanna Esposito recorded five saves for the Golden Knights (3-0-0/1-0-0 NE-10), while Butlin stopped four shots on target for UMass Lowell (1-2-1/1-1-0 NE-10), which was ranked third in the NE-10 preseason coaches' poll.
Up next, the Golden Knights return home Sunday for a 1:00 pm conference match versus Southern New Hampshire. Meanwhile, the River Hawks will entertain NE-10 rival Stonehill next Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
