EASTON, MA – Senior shortstop
Ashley Anderson belted two grand slams and added a solo shot to lead The College of Saint Rose to an 11-8 victory in the nightcap of a thrilling doubleheader at Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill today. Earlier, the Golden Knights (11-27/9-19 NE-10) dropped the opener 5-4 in 11 innings after rallying from a 3-0 deficit.
Anderson belted her first grand slam in the third and then repeated the feat in the seventh after adding a two out, solo shot in the fourth.
Anderson wound up 4-for-5 with nine RBI and three runs scored. Junior left fielder
Katie Ives went 3-for-4; while junior designated player
Nicole Traylor and junior catcher
Nikki Woodard added two hits apiece.
Anderson's first blast highlighted a six run, fourth inning for the Golden Knights (11-27/9-19 NE-10) who took a 7-3 lead an inning later following Anderson's second home run of the game. Her subsequent homer put Saint Rose ahead by an 11-3 margin in the seventh. However, Stonehill (20-16-1/15-11 NE-10) made it interesting by pushing across five runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Sophomore catcher Sarah Stumper finished 3-for-4; while junior second baseman Katy Abarr, freshman designated player Nicole Eisenmann and senior first baseman Kristen Clark had two hits each for the Skyhawks.
In the opener, sophomore center fielder
Courtney Galuski doubled to left-center and scored on a base hit by senior right fielder
Meg Rios. Rios then scored on a double steal to bring Saint Rose to within a run, 3-2, in the fifth. An inning later, Woodard bounced a base hit through the right side that brought in Ives with the tying run.
The Golden Knights left the bases loaded in the seventh and stranded the winning run in scoring position in the eighth as well. They finally broke through in the 10th via a Galuski RBI single that scored Traylor. However, Stonehill answered with a run in its half and then scored the game-winner in the 11th when Eisenmann doubled home freshman center fielder Courtney Marchand, who was placed on second to start the frame per tiebreaker rule.
Anderson went 3-for-6, Galuski wound up 3-for-5 and Ives finished 2-for-5 to lead the Saint Rose offense. Sophomore left-hander
Sarah Arbogast suffered the tough-luck loss. She allowed two runs, none earned, on three hits throughout 3.1 innings of work out of the bullpen.
Up next, Saint Rose closes out its 2010 campaign with a noon conference doubleheaders at Bentley in Waltham, MA tomorrow. Meanwhile, Stonehill will host league rival Le Moyne at noon on Sunday.
