ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose pushed across a pair of runs in the first inning of the nightcap and never trailed to forge a split with Northeast-10 Conference preseason favorite Le Moyne this afternoon at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights ended up taking the finale 5-3, after dropping the opener 6-1.
Senior shortstop
Ashley Anderson had an RBI base hit and Saint Rose scored again courtesy of a Le Moyne (18-18/16-10 NE-10) throwing error in the opening frame. Junior second baseman
Ashley Fryer added an RBI single in the second and sophomore third baseman
Kayla Kuilema belted a run scoring triple two innings later to make it 4-1 Golden Knights (10-26/8-18 NE-10).
The visiting Dolphins pushed another run across in the fifth, after going up 1-0 in the first, to make it a 4-2 ballgame, but sophomore left-hander
Sarah Arbogast avoided further damage by inducing a groundball that got her out of a bases loaded jam.
Kuilema then added an RBI double in the sixth, before Le Moyne scored an unearned run with two outs in the seventh. However, Arbogast got the final out en route to her ninth complete game of the year. Arbogast wound up surrendering two earned runs and striking out six to chalk up her fifth victory. Kuilema went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Anderson finished 2-for-4 with a double in addition to her first inning single.
Senior second baseman Kelly Schweikert, freshman center fielder Demetra Kermidas and senior left fielder Bailey Phillips all went 2-for-4 to lead Le Moyne.
In the opener, Phillips belted a two-run homer to put Le Moyne up 2-0 in the first. The Dolphins then tacked on a run in the second, third and fourth frames; before sophomore first baseman Leah Ford added a solo home run in the sixth.
Meanwhile, junior right-hander Jenna Vanacore scattered five hits and fanned three over the distance to run her record to 10-6 on the season.
Schweikert finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Kermidas added a pair of hits to lead the Dolphins offense. Phillips, Ford and sophomore catcher Morgan Edmondson all had two hits as well. Sophomore catcher
Jessica Butterbrodt had a solo homer, her fifth of the year, to account for the lone Golden Knights score.
Up next, Saint Rose closes out its 2010 campaign with a pair of noon conference doubleheaders on the road. The Golden Knights will visit Stonehill in Easton, MA on Saturday; and then meet Bentley in Waltham, MA Sunday. Le Moyne on the other hand has the same schedule transposed this weekend. The Dolphins will face Bentley on Saturday, and square off with Stonehill on Sunday.
