ALBANY – Sophomore second baseman
Kayla Kuilema stroked a base hit to center field that scored sophomore right fielder
Lindsey David with the winning run in the seventh inning of the opener to lead The College of Saint Rose to a 4-3 triumph against visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption today. It marked the 2010 league opener for both clubs.
More importantly, Kuilema's hit put a fitting end to the first game ever played at the Plumeri Sports Complex, the new permanent home for the Golden Knights.
Unfortunately, a late rally fell short in the finale as the visiting Greyhounds (5-7/1-1 NE-10) broke open a 3-1 game by pushing across four more runs in the fifth inning.
Kuilema finished 3-for-4 to lead the Golden Knights (3-9/1-1 NE-10) offense in the first game, while junior right-hander
Nicole Traylor allowed to just one hit throughout 3.1 innings of relief. Junior left fielder Bernadette Fuentes had a two RBI double to highlight a three run, fourth inning for Assumption.
In the nightcap, Traylor finished 3-for-4 and both Kuilema and senior shortstop
Ashley Anderson had two hits each to lead Saint Rose. Anderson homered and doubled and sophomore third baseman
Jessica Butterbrodt also hit one out of the ballpark for the Golden Knights. Freshman shortstop Brenna Morrissey finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace the Greyhounds.
Up next, both teams are back on the diamond tomorrow with league doubleheaders on tap. Saint Rose is scheduled to host New Haven at 1:00 pm, while Assumption will continue its trek west on the N.Y. State Thruway for a noon doubleheader at Le Moyne College in Syracuse.
