SAINT ROSE GUTS OUT 74-70 WIN OVER ADELPHI

Sophomore guard Shea Bromirski tied his career-high with 27 points on the strength of 10-for-10 shooting from the line
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose overcame an 11-point, second half deficit to win its third straight game via a 74-70 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Adelphi University tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (13-10/10-8 NE-10) now find themselves alone in seventh place in the league standings with four regular-season contests remaining.

The game featured 56 personal fouls that translated into a combined 63 foul shots. Saint Rose made the most of its trips to the stripe, burying 79.3 percent (23-for-29) of its attempts in the contest. The Panthers (16-9/9-9 NE-10), who represent the top free throw shooting squad in the nation (Division II), hit 73.5 percent (25-for-34) of their opportunities with all nine misses coming in the second half.

After both clubs played to a 34-34 deadlock following the first period, Adelphi embarked on a 16-5 run to take its largest lead of the game, 50-39, with 13:15 remaining. Senior guard Casey Cosgrove knocked down a pair of 3-pointers during the run, while junior guard Richard Byrd and senior center Steffon Farley each converted conventional three-point plays.

Saint Rose responded with a 20-5 run of its own over the next 8:37 to go up four, 59-55. Freshman forward Devin Grimes pulled the Golden Knights even for the first time since the beginning of the second period with a layup. After Byrd went 1-for-2 at the line on the other end, Saint Rose sophomore guard Shea Bromirski hit a jumper and freshman guard Andre Pope completed the comeback with a trey and the Golden Knights never trailed again.

Saint Rose actually led by 10, 72-62, with 27 seconds on the clock. The Panthers scored six straight points when freshman guard John Calarco drained a “three” and senior guard Chris Diasparra connected on three straight free throws after being fouled behind the arc to keep things interesting. However, the Golden Knights proved their mettle from the charity stripe by going 10-for-12 down the stretch.

Bromirski tied his career-high with 27 points following a perfect 10-for-10 effort from the foul line. Pope wound up with 21 points behind 5-of-7 shooting from the arc, while sophomore forward Sheldon Griffin contributed 11 rebounds and five points.

Cosgrove led three players in twin-figures for Adelphi with 17 points. Byrd finished with 16 points, while Diasparra had a “double-double” with 11 points and 11 boards.

At halftime of tonight's game, Saint Rose honored the athletic achievement of more than 80 student-athletes with a brief ceremony.

Both squads return to league action Saturday afternoon. Saint Rose is scheduled to go to Pace University for a 3:30 pm tip-off in Pleasantville, while the Panthers are set to host Assumption College at 3:00 pm in Garden City.
