ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose rallied from a 10 point, first half deficit and held Assumption without a field goal throughout all but 19 seconds of the game's final 10 minutes en route to a 60-47 Northeast-10 Conference victory at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium tonight. In the process, the Golden Knights (11-10/10-6 NE-10) avenged a 64-58 setback in their league opener at Assumption back on November 18.
Saint Rose furthermore won for the sixth time in its last seven outings and improved its record to 8-3 at home, while the Greyhounds dropped their seventh straight on the road.
Sophomore guard
Ashley Rath led the Golden Knights in scoring for the third straight time with 15 points. Sophomore center
Ali Johnson finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard
Elizabeth Buckley scored 10 of her 13 points after halftime. Junior forward
Amy Voelkel wound up with eight points and 12 boards, while junior guard
Lynsey Timbrouck dished out six assists and committed only one turnover. It marked her third straight game with at least half a dozen helpers.
The Golden Knights found themselves down 22-12 with 9:16 left until intermission when they scored seven unanswered points to cut their deficit to three, 22-19, with 5:18 to go. Rath finished off a Timbrouck steal and Buckley canned a trey to cap the spurt. Assumption sophomore forward Kelly Meredith scored a layup to halt the run and Saint Rose eventually went into the locker room down a bucket, 28-26, at the break.
Johnson opened the second period with a layup that tied the game, 28-28, for the first time since a 2-2 deadlock in the very early going. There were three additional ties throughout the ensuing nine minutes, before Buckley ignited an 18-5 final push by knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers. After Assumption junior guard Molly Griffiths canned a 3-pointer that made it 42-42 at the 10:08 mark, the Greyhounds did not score from the field until they converted a moot bucket in the game's waning moments.
Meredith finished with 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Assumption, while senior forward Kayla Parker and freshman guard Gabrielle Gibson tossed in 11 and nine points respectively.
Looking ahead, both teams have 1:30 pm conference games on Saturday's docket. The Golden Knights head to Springfield to face American International, while Assumption welcomes Pace University to Laska Gymnasium.
