BALANCED ATTACK HELPS SAINT ROSE PUT AWAY NEW HAVEN

Junior forward Amy Voelkel finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in a balanced Saint Rose attack
WEST HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team placed five players in double-figures scoring for the first time all year on the way to a 64-59 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the University of New Haven tonight at Charger Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (14-11/13-7 NE-10), who have now won three straight games, also avenged a 55-45 loss to the Chargers (12-13/10-10 NE-10) in Albany on December 2.

As for tonight, Saint Rose sophomore guard Ashley Rath led the scoring parade for the 13th time this year with 16 points. Junior forward Amy Voelkel filled up the box score with 12 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while sophomore forward Ali Johnson added 12 points behind 8-of-10 shooting from the foul line. Also, junior guard Lynsey Timbrouck and sophomore guard Ola Shajuyigbe contributed 10 points apiece.

New Haven was led by junior guard Dominique Stellmacher's 22-point effort. Senior guard Helin Marte nearly missed a “double-double” with 13 points and nine assists to go along with six helpers.

After going into the locker room tied 34-34, both clubs pretty much traded hoops for the first seven minutes of the second period. At the 13:00 mark, the Golden Knights afforded themselves some breathing room when Shajuyigbe keyed a 9-0 run with back-to-back layups that transformed a 44-43 deficit into a 52-44 Saint Rose lead with 10:29 on the clock.

The Golden Knights managed to hold on down the stretch despite being held without a field goal throughout the final 6:19 and knocking down only 5-of-10 free throw attempts over that span. Timbrouck cashed in off a feed from Voelkel to make it a 59-53 ballgame and turned up their own defensive pressure that paid off as the Chargers mustered only a pair of field goals the rest of the way.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose will host Southern Connecticut State University this Saturday in its 2009-10 regular-season home finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 pm with “Senior Day” festivities set to take place prior to game time. Meanwhile, New Haven plays its final regular-season home contest Saturday when the Chargers welcome Pace University for a 2:00 pm league affair.
