PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The College of Saint Rose outscored host Pace University 16-5 throughout the final four-plus minutes by holding the Setters to only a moot field goal in the waning seconds of a 78-67 Northeast-10 Conference victory this afternoon. In the process, the Golden Knights (13-11/12-7 NE-10) snapped the Setters nine-game win streak and are now 8-2 over their last 10 games. Saint Rose helped its cause by forcing Pace into 19 turnovers that led to 22 points.
Sophomore forward
Ali Johnson made her first six shots on the way to a career-high 20 points for the Golden Knights. Sophomore guard
Ola Shajuyigbe wound up with 16 points, while sophomore guard
Ashley Rath and senior guard
Elizabeth Buckley tossed in 12 each.
Furthermore, junior forward
Amy Voelkel and junior guard
Lynsey Timbrouck both filled up the box score. Voelkel had nine points and eight boards, and also tied her career-high with nine assists. Timbrouck finished with eight points, nine boards, and five assists to go with three steals.
After Pace sophomore guard Carol Johnson converted a layup that tied the game for the sixth time, 62-62, with 4:25 remaining; Timbrouck drained a jumper, Voelkel hit a pair from the foul line and Buckley finished in the paint to make it 68-62 Saint Rose with 2:43 left. Senior forward Taylor Losey then went 1-for-2 from the stripe to halt the Setters' scoring spell, but Buckley responded with a 3-pointer that put the Golden Knights in the driver's seat, 71-63, with 1:15 remaining.
Johnson and junior forward Brittany Huggins had 16 points apiece to lead Pace, while Losey and sophomore forward Maral Javadifar had 13 and 10 points respectively.
The first half featured four ties and five lead changes although the Golden Knights found themselves down six, 34-28, with 2:00 remaining. However, Rath hit a pair from the free throw line and then came up with a block at the other end that Shajuyigbe made the most of by draining a “three” to bring Saint Rose to within a point, 34-33, at the break.
It remained a one possession game during the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza when Timbrouck and Buckley both scored inside to afford the Golden Knights the biggest lead, 58-50, by either team up until that point. Pace eventually pulled back even, but Saint Rose never allowed the Setters to get over the final hurdle.
Looking ahead, both teams return to league action with 5:30 pm dates Wednesday. The Golden Knights will visit the University of New Haven, while Pace will head to Syracuse to take on Le Moyne.
