ALBANY – Junior guard
Ashley Rath tossed in a career-high 29 points and The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team forced 27 turnovers by visiting Southern Connecticut State University en route to a 71-56 Northeast-10 Conference victory today at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (6-2/3-2 NE-10) won for the fourth time in five games, while the Owls have now dropped four in a row.
Rath buried a career-best six, 3-pointers in the game and wound up 11-of-19 from the floor to reach a new plateau. Fellow junior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe added nine points, while junior forward
Jessica Walton added a season-high eight points in 17 minutes of reserve action.
Junior guard Alex Fiola led Southern Connecticut with 22 points. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Camille Fantini contributed 10 points and six boards.
Saint Rose busted open a three point ballgame at the break by limiting the Owls to just two field goals throughout the first 13 minutes of the second half. The Golden Knights subsequently outscored Southern Connecticut 14-7 over that span to take a 16 point, 60-44 lead with 7:22 to go. Rath knocked down a trey and Walton had a pair of free throws and a jumper to close out the run with seven straight points.
The Owls never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way and again could muster only four field goals over the last seven minutes. Southern Connecticut wound up shooting 34.6 percent (18-for-52) from the floor, while Saint Rose buried 47.2 percent (25-for-53) of its opportunities that included an 8-for-15 effort from the arc. The Golden Knights further helped their cause by generating 28 points off the aforementioned 27 miscues by the Owls.
Both teams are back in action Tuesday night with a pair of league games on the schedule. Saint Rose heads to upstate rival Le Moyne College, while Southern Connecticut is set to host Assumption College. Both games will tip-off at 5:30 pm.
