WEST HAVEN, CT – Junior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe tossed in a career-high 31 points to lead The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team past the University of New Haven 65-50 in a Northeast-10 Conference game tonight at Charger Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (5-2/2-2 NE-10) improved to 3-1 on the road this season after burying a season-high nine, 3-pointers in the contest.
Shajuyigbe accounted for nearly half of the scoring output for Saint Rose after finishing 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and going 11-for-20 from the floor while bettering her previous career-high by nine points. Junior guard
Ashley Rath and junior forward
Ali Johnson each added 11 points as well.
The Chargers (2-3/1-3 NE-10) also had three players reach double-figures in scoring led by senior guard Dominique Stellmacher. Stellmacher finished right on her average with 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds for the “double-double.” Meanwhile, freshman guard Anh-Dao Tran and senior guard Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty contributed 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Golden Knights actually trailed by five, 32-27, at the break. However, Saint Rose shot a season-high 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from the floor throughout the final 20 minutes and limited New Haven to just eight field goals over that span. The Golden Knights thus outscored the Chargers 38-18 in the second half alone.
Saint Rose did most of its damage throughout the first 10 minutes of the second stanza. The Golden Knights opened with a 20-7 run to take an eight point, 47-39, lead with 10:15 to go. Johnson and Shajuyigbe combined for eight straight points to cap the jaunt.
It was still anybody's game with just more than four minutes remaining. With Saint Rose clinging to a four point, 54-50 edge, Rath drained back-to-back treys and the Chargers never recovered. New Haven was held scoreless the rest of the way as the Golden Knights scored the last 11 points of the contest to produce the final margin. Shajuyigbe punctuated things with yet another deep ball.
Both clubs return to action Saturday afternoon with a pair of league games on the schedule. Saint Rose returns home to host Southern Connecticut State University, while the Chargers entertain Pace University. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 1:30 pm.
