GOLDEN KNIGHTS SUFFER FIRST SETBACK

Sophomore guard Andre Pope had 16 points and tied his season-high with seven assists in today's setback at Pace.
PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The College of Saint Rose suffered its first loss of the season with an 84-74 setback at Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University this afternoon. The game was close throughout with five ties and 11 lead changes, but the Setters shot 51.9 percent (14-for-27) during the final 20 minutes en route to their third victory in the last four outings.

The Golden Knights (5-1/2-1 NE-10) rallied from an 11 point, first half deficit to take the lead on three brief occasions midway through the second stanza, but the Setters (5-2/1-2 NE-10) went on a late 13-3 spurt with seven minutes remaining and sealed it by going 14-for-15 from the foul line in the final two minutes.

Junior guard Shea Bromirski led four Saint Rose players in double-figures scoring. Bromirski finished with 25 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the arc, while sophomore guard Andre Pope had 16 points and tied his season high with seven assists.

Freshman guard Kai Smith put Pace in control by draining a trey that made it a 36-25 ballgame with 5:56 remaining until the break. Junior forward Brian Hanuschak then answered inside and Pope knocked down a 3-pointer to pull the Golden Knights to within six, 36-30, which is where the margin stood at halftime with the Setters holding a 40-34 cushion.

Saint Rose got to within a point on two occasions during the opening seven minutes of the second stanza and finally got over the hump when junior guard Rob Gutierrez put back a Bromirski miss that made it 50-49 Golden Knights. The lead swung both ways during the next seven minutes, but junior guard Adrian Mills made a layup and junior forward Delroy Daley finished inside that ignited the late spurt and consequently put the Setters ahead to stay, 63-61, with 5:14 showing on the clock.

Hanuschak registered his second “double-double” of the young season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Gutierrez also added 11 points to round the Saint Rose quartet of double-figures scorers. Mills finished with 23 points, while freshman guard Denzel Primus-Devonish contributed 15 points and eight assists to lead the Setters.

Up next, both teams return to NE-10 action with 7:30 pm road dates Wednesday. Saint Rose will visit the University of New Haven, while Pace will head to Syracuse to meet Le Moyne.
