PLEASANTVILLE, NY – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team managed just three field goals throughout the opening 11 minutes of play and was never able to fully recover in a 64-58 Northeast-10 Conference loss at Pace University this afternoon at the Goldstein Center. The Setters (6-0/3-0 NE-10) remained unbeaten throughout their first six contests with the victory, while the Golden Knights suffered their first road loss of the year.
Junior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe led three players in double-figures for Saint Rose with a season-high 18 points. Junior forward
Ali Johnson nearly missed a “double-double” behind 11 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard
Lynsey Timbrouck also chipped in with 11 points.
Senior forwards Kristin Connolly and Brittany Huggins led a balanced attack for Pace. Connolly tossed in 14 points and hauled in seven caroms, while Huggins added 13 points.
Shajuyigbe converted a layup on the second possession of the ballgame for the Golden Knights (4-2/1-2 NE-10), but the Setters limited Saint Rose to just two more buckets to take a 21-6 advantage at the 9:03 mark. Johnson and Shajuyigbe ended the early drought by combining for the game's next seven points to cut the Golden Knights' deficit to eight, 21-13.
It was at that point Saint Rose began to regain its composure. The Golden Knights outscored Pace 13-8 to walk into the locker room down only three, 29-26, after Shajuyigbe drained one of her three, 3-pointers with 27 seconds to go. It was the smallest deficit for Saint Rose since the 16:52 mark of the first half.
The Setters came out and maintained their slim margin throughout the early stages of the second stanza, but ultimately used an 11-5 run to boost their advantage back to 10, 46-36, with 12:05 left in the contest. The Golden Knights again were held to just a field goal and three free throws from Timbrouck and Shajuyigbe that allowed Pace to complete its jaunt.
Saint Rose was never able to get closer than five points the rest of the way. The Golden Knights still trailed by nine, 59-50, with less than two minutes to play and began putting the Setters on the charity stripe. Pace converted 7-of-10 opportunities to keep Saint Rose from generating its comeback bid.
Looking ahead, both squads hit the road for a pair of league games on Wednesday night. The Golden Knights will travel to the University of New Haven, while the Setters head northwest to Le Moyne College. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 pm.
