ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team shot just 26.5 percent (9-for-34) from the floor throughout the final 20 minutes, while visiting Assumption College buried half of its opportunities and held off a late rally to defeat the Golden Knights 69-65 in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both squads tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. It marked only the third time in 10 years Saint Rose failed to win its home-opener.
The Golden Knights (2-1/0-1 NE-10) were limited to just five field goals over the final 11-plus minutes, although it was a one possession ballgame, 67-65, following a 3-pointer by junior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe with 38 seconds remaining. Following a turnover by the Greyhounds, Saint Rose went to junior guard
Ashley Rath on the left block, but her jumper was off the mark and Assumption knocked down a pair of free throws on the other end to provide the final margin.
Senior forward
Amy Voelkel led four Golden Knights' starters in double-figures scoring with 13 points to go along with eight boards and three steals. Senior guard
Lynsey Timbrouck contributed 12 points, seven assists and seven rebounds, while Shajuyigbe and Rath added 12 and 11 points respectively.
Senior forward Molly Griffiths led Assumption with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the “double-double” in her first outing of 2010-11. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Gabrielle Gibson and junior forward Kelly Meredith chipped in 17 and 14 points respectively.
The Greyhounds (1-0/1-0 NE-10) assumed control midway through the first half with a 13-2 run that turned a 17-17 tie into a 30-19 lead following a layup by Griffiths. Six different players scored during the jaunt that covered nearly five minutes.
Saint Rose then embarked on a 20-0 outburst that bridged the two halves and thus provided the Golden Knights with a 39-30 advantage with 17:44 to go. Junior forward
Alison McGrath accounted for eight points over that span, while Voelkel capped things with a conventional three-point play in the early stages of the second stanza.
It was at that point Assumption began to claw its way back and regain its composure. Gibson finally silenced the streak with a jumper in the paint, which triggered a quick 8-0 outbreak that made it a 39-38 affair at the 14:58 mark. The Greyhounds then took the lead for good just a minute and a half later when sophomore forward Sabrina Siciliano canned a jumper in the paint. Saint Rose never got closer than the aforementioned two-point deficit it faced with 38 seconds on the clock.
Up next, the Golden Knights head to Bloomfield College this Saturday for a 1:00 pm non-league date. Meanwhile, Assumption travels to Caldwell College Friday night for a 5:30 pm tip-off.
