ALBANY – Franklin Pierce, ranked #5 in the country according to this week's NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA II Poll, used a deliberate and efficient attack to hand The College of Saint Rose a 2-0 defeat in a Northeast-10 Conference contest this afternoon at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Junior midfielder Paul Latif designed both strikes for the Ravens (9-1-0/7-0-0 NE-10) who have now won seven straight since suffering a 1-0 overtime setback at Dowling on September 7.
Latif initially set up fellow junior midfielder Diego Tabares who provided the eventual game-winner in the 21st minute. Tabares collected a cross from Latif near the right sideline, took one dribble to his left in the center of the box, and let go a blast from 12-yards that found the back of the net. Senior defender Jeff Hay then made it 2-0 midway through the second stanza when he headed home a cross off a set a piece that was initiated on the left flank by Latif.
For Saint Rose, junior keeper
Patrik Ohlsson recorded six saves, including four in the second half, to keep the Golden Knights (1-9-1/0-8-0 NE-10) close. Meanwhile, junior keeper Vinny Papageorgiou needed to make just one save for Franklin Pierce.
Looking ahead, both clubs return to the pitch 7:00 pm Tuesday with a pair of conference matches on the docket. Saint Rose heads east on the Mass Pike to visit American International in Springfield, while Franklin Pierce welcomes Bentley to Rindge, NH.
