STREAKING NYIT DEFEATS SAINT ROSE 3-0

Junior outside hitter Sarah Kahrs contributed seven digs, four kills and an ace in a 3-0 setback versus NYIT
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team was forced into 24 attack errors while visiting New York Institute of Technology committed only 16 in 88 attempts that allowed the Bears to take a 3-0 (12-25, 22-25, 18-25) non-conference victory tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. In the process, NYIT won its sixth straight while Saint Rose has dropped five of its last six.

The Golden Knights (4-13) did not get much going offensively and never led throughout the first and third sets. Freshman outside hitter Alex Gagliano finished with four kills, three aces and a pair of digs, while sophomore outside hitter Sarah Kahrs managed seven digs and four kills.

The Bears (11-7) received solid all-around performances from junior outside hitter Tugce Sirdas and freshman outside hitter Shelby Cable. Sirdas wound up with a match-high 14 digs to go along with eight kills and a pair of aces, while Cable led all players with 10 kills and contributed seven digs.

Saint Rose found itself down two, 10-8, in the opening frame, but the Bears embarked on a 15-2 run capped by an ace from sophomore outside hitter Diana Briody for the 25-12 win.

The second set saw 17 ties and nine lead changes before NYIT broke open a 22-22 affair with three straight points for a 25-22 triumph. Junior setter Damla Albayrak (Istanbul, Turkey) set up Cable twice and junior libero Lisa Peacock added an ace for the final margin.

The Golden Knights trailed 9-0 in set three before cutting their deficit to three, 16-13, on an ace by Kahrs. However, Saint Rose never got closer than three points the rest of the way.

The Golden Knights will cap their season-long five-match homestand tomorrow afternoon when they return to league action as Southern Connecticut State arrives in Albany for a 1:00 pm conference contest. The Bears get back to their East Coast Conference schedule Tuesday night when they host Molloy at 7:00 pm.
