ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team chalked up its fourth clean sheet within the last five games and the host Golden Knights scored twice in each half en route to a 4-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Southern Connecticut State University this evening at Sullivan Field at the Christian Plumeri Sports Complex. Saint Rose thus closed out its second consecutive league slate with an unblemished record (15-0) and continued to add to its single-season record for goals scored (67).
Four different players found the back of the net tonight, two of which tallied their first strike of the 2010 season. Junior midfielder
Brittany Godin and junior forward
Aoife Herbert scored three minutes apart midway through the first half to get the Golden Knights (18-0/15-0 NE-10) going. Godin came sliding through the six-yard line for a nifty strike, while Herbert recorded her first goal in a Saint Rose uniform after finding the upper-90 with a hard, driving shot from the right channel.
The Golden Knights, who are once again the top-ranked club in this week's
NSCAA HendrickCars.com NCAA Division II Poll, were back at it again within the first 12 minutes of the second period. Junior midfielder
Christina Cuffari collected a ball on the endline, dribbled back out to the corner of the penalty area and lofted a shot over the head of Southern Connecticut junior keeper Olivia Heffernan to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Just 5:48 later, senior defender
Kelly Guerin capped the scoring for Saint Rose when she ripped a shot from the top of the box that found the left corner of the net with her first marker of 2010.
Three more Golden Knights' found the scoring column as well. Freshman forward
Sydney Bond registered a pair of assists throughout the contest, while freshman forward
Carmelina Puopolo and junior forward Nicola D'Errico dished out one assist each.
Senior keeper
Deanna Esposito stopped both shots-on-target that she faced while chalking up her 10th shutout of the year for Saint Rose. In addition, Esposito recorded her 18th victory of the year to tie the single-season school mark that was set by Shannon Murphy ('09) in 2008.
Meanwhile, Heffernan turned aside eight shots for the Owls before giving way to senior keeper Katie Didio, who made two saves throughout the final 29:56.
With the conclusion of the 2010 regular-season slate this evening, the pairings for the NE-10 Tournament will be released later this week as first round action gets going on Sunday, October 31.
