RINDGE, NH – The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team put 11 of its 20 shots on target, but junior midfielder
Christina Cuffari scored the only goal the Golden Knights needed in a 1-0 victory at Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce University this afternoon. Saint Rose is now unbeaten in six consecutive matches (5-0-1) against the Ravens, who also suffered their first home loss of the 2010 campaign today in addition to having their four-game win streak snapped.
Freshman forward Camelina Puopolo hooked up with Cuffari at the 31:30 mark to provide the difference in today's match. Cuffari collected a pass near the top left corner of the penalty box, turned a fired a low line drive that found the back of the net for her seventh marker of the year.
The Golden Knights (17-0/14-0 NE-10), who remain the nation's top-ranked squad according to this week's
NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA Division II Poll, nearly broke the ice in the 17th minute prior to Cuffari's strike. Senior defender
Coco Ebersole nailed the crossbar 16:56 into the contest, but Franklin Pierce (11-4-1/9-4-1 NE-10) cleared the rebound to keep things scoreless early on.
Saint Rose finished the game with a 20-12 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. The Golden Knights limited the Ravens to just four shots throughout the final 45 minutes, while firing 11 of their own.
Both keepers were outstanding for their respective sides. Senior keeper
Deanna Esposito wound up with a season-high 10 saves for the Golden Knights, while junior netminder Jocelyn Leon stopped 10 shots of her own to keep the Ravens within striking distance.
Both clubs are scheduled to close out their respective 2010 regular season schedules on Wednesday. Saint Rose returns home to host Southern Connecticut State University at 5:00 pm, while Franklin Pierce heads to Saint Anselm College for a 4:00 pm league date.
