ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team accomplished something no other club in program history had in eight years and in the process kept its unblemished record alive following a 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Saint Michael's College tonight at Sullivan Field at the Christian Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights had two first half tallies stand up, while the Purple Knights suffered their fourth straight one-goal loss.
Saint Rose (16-0-0/13-0-0 NE-10), which remains the top-ranked team in the country according to this week's
NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA Division II Poll, added another milestone to its already successful campaign within the first 45 minutes. The Golden Knights established a single-season school record for goals with two games still remaining on their 2010 regular-season schedule. With two markers this evening, Saint Rose now has 62 throughout 16 contests, thus surpassing the 2002 squad that found the back of the net 61 times in 20 games.
Senior midfielder
Amanda Deck was responsible for both tallies for the Golden Knights. Deck collected a pass from senior defender
Coco Ebersole, turned the corner on the right side and found the far post to put Saint Rose in front 1-0 at the 15:34 mark. She then knocked home a penalty kick in the 28th minute after freshman forward
Sydney Bond had been tripped up in the box.
Saint Michael's (5-9-2/4-8-2 NE-10) made things interesting by getting a score of its own just 7:43 into the second period. Junior forward Kristin Hagenbarth fed sophomore midfielder Megan Olsen on the left side of the penalty area and Olsen drove home a low line drive near post to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
The Purple Knights managed only two more shots from that point on as the Golden Knights held a 15-3 margin in shots throughout the final 45 minutes. Saint Rose also racked up a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game, but was unable to break through for an insurance marker.
Senior keeper
Deanna Esposito made two saves for the Golden Knights in the opening frame, while sophomore keeper
Susan Cowan turned aside two shots in the second half of play. Saint Michael's junior keeper Ashleigh Adams was spectacular throughout, finishing with six stops in the contest.
Prior to today's match, nine student-athletes were honored as part of “Senior Day” festivities. Deck, Ebersole, Esposito, Cowan,
Kristen Bidosky,
Kaitlyn Berry,
Katie Whiting,
Jaclyn Evans and
Kelly Guerin will all be suiting up for their final regular-season games within the next week.
Up next, Saint Rose heads to league-rival Franklin Pierce University Saturday for a noon kickoff in Rindge, NH. The two clubs have accounted for each of the last 10 postseason NE-10 titles. Meanwhile, Saint Michael's closes out its 2010 regular season Sunday at New Haven in a 1:30 pm start.
