MANCHESTER, NH – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team was outshot 24-5 and host Southern New Hampshire University scored twice in each half on the way to a 4-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory tonight at Larkin Field. The Penmen, who have now won four in a row, are ranked #9 in this week's NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA Division II Poll.
Senior midfielder Danny Hernandez led Southern New Hampshire with two goals and an assist. Meanwhile, senior midfielders Michael Adam and Mark Cotton each had a pair of strikes.
Adam and Cotton put up two markers within a six-minute span in the first period. Adam found the far post at the 11:36 mark for the eventual game-winner, while Hernandez set up Cotton 17:34 into the contest by slipping a pass through the left side that Cotton had to tap in for a 2-0 Penmen advantage.
Hernandez then took things into his own hands immediately after intermission. He knocked home a rebound 2:25 into the second frame and then beat a Saint Rose junior keeper
Patrik Ohlsson less than three minutes later with his sixth goal of the season to produce the final margin.
The Golden Knights nearly got on the board in the 73rd minute. Saint Rose began applying pressure when freshman midfielder
Jacob Sand fired a shot that was stopped by Southern New Hampshire junior keeper Mark Painchaud. Just more than a minute later, senior midfielder
Anthony Eleftherion was denied by the post.
Ohlsson finished with five saves in 90 minutes of action for the Golden Knights (1-12-1/0-10-0 NE-10). Painchaud needed to make one stop for Southern New Hampshire.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose has its final non-conference date of the 2010 slate scheduled for Wednesday evening as St. Thomas Aquinas College arrives in Albany for a 7:00 pm kickoff at Sullivan Field. Meanwhile, Southern New Hampshire returns to action Wednesday when the Penmen head to Bentley University for a 3:30 pm league contest.
