ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team broke the ice first, but visiting New York Institute of Technology scored three unanswered goals to bust open a tight ballgame en route to a 4-2 non-conference victory over the Golden Knights tonight on a slick surface at Sullivan Field.
Saint Rose (1-11-1) junior forward
Taras Panchishak was tripped up in the 18-yard box that set up a penalty kick for the Golden Knights at the 31:03 mark. Freshman back
Alan McGrath stepped up and buried the try top shelf to give Saint Rose a 1-0 edge.
The Bears (4-6-1) answered just 23 seconds later and then tallied two more times within a 1:05 span in the second period to take control. Junior midfielder Brett Garrett knotted things at 1-1 with a low line drive to the far post. Freshman midfielder Vinny Caccavale then took over for NYIT with an unassisted tally 66:41 into the contest before setting up classmate Matthew Didonna that provided a 3-1 advantage.
Caccavale later beat Saint Rose junior keeper
Patrik Ohlsson for the final margin by knocking home his own rebound after Ohlsson had initially turned it aside on a penalty kick with 1:02 to play.
Prior to that, McGrath cut the Golden Knights' deficit to one, 3-2, with his second strike of the match on a blast from 25-yards out that was redirected into the net by a Bears' defender.
Ohlsson picked up three saves throughout 90 minutes of action for Saint Rose. Meanwhile, freshman keeper Michael Doran stopped two shots for NYIT.
Both squads are back on the pitch Saturday when they return to their respective league schedules. The Golden Knights head to #9 Southern New Hampshire University for a 7:00 pm kickoff, while NYIT travels to Mercy College for a 3:00 pm East Coast Conference affair.
