WEST HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team struck twice throughout a two-minute span during the first period, which proved to be plenty of offense to remain unbeaten in a 5-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory at the University of New Haven this afternoon. The Golden Knights, who are ranked #1 in the
NSCAA/HendrickCars.com NCAA Division II Poll for the fifth straight week, have now taken six straight meetings between the two clubs.
Saint Rose (14-0/11-0 NE-10) lit up the scoreboard with five markers for the sixth time in 14 contests and continued to add leverage to its NCAA-best 4.08 goal scoring average. Freshman forward
Sydney Bond and senior midfielder
Amanda Deck each found the back of the net once in each half to lead the Golden Knights' scoring parade. Meanwhile, sophomore midfielder
Alayna Shaw tacked on her third goal of the year in the 83rdminute.
Junior midfielder
Christina Cuffari and junior forward Gianna D'Errico each added an assist for Saint Rose as did freshman forward
Carmelina Puopolo.
Bond and Deck scored 1:59 apart midway through the opening frame to jumpstart things for the Golden Knights. Cuffari lofted a corner that Bond converted at the 20:55 mark. Deck then gathered a loose ball inside the penalty area and found the back of the net 22:54 into the contest.
The quick strikes continued in the early stages of the second half thanks again to Deck and Bond. Deck beat New Haven junior keeper Kim Taylor from just outside the 18-yard box two minutes after kickoff and then Bond put the finishing touches on a set piece that was started by D'Errico 4:26 later.
Shaw wound up connecting with Puopolo late in the contest after heading home a cross from eight-yards out.
From an overall standpoint, the Golden Knights held an 18-9 edge in shots and an 11-3 margin in corner kicks while registering their ninth shutout of the year. Senior keeper
Deanna Esposito made five saves, while Taylor stopped seven shots on target for the Chargers (6-6-2/4-5-2 NE-10).
Looking ahead, both squads have a pair of league games on tap this Saturday afternoon. Saint Rose has a key 1:00 pm match-up at Sullivan Field versus #21 Merrimack College, which is currently second behind the Golden Knights in the NE-10 standings. Meanwhile, New Haven heads to Stonehill College for a 2:00 pm contest in Easton, MA.
