PHILADELPHIA – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team dug itself an early 10-2 hole and host Holy Family University led wire-to-wire in a 68-56 non-conference victory over the Golden Knights at the Campus Center in Philadelphia this afternoon. The Tigers (10-1) converted 81.0 percent (17-for-21) of their opportunities from the stripe, including 7-of-8 throughout the final three minutes, to improve to 6-0 at home this year.
Holy Family raced out to a 10-2 edge during the first four minutes behind back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomore guard Lauren Peters and junior forward Meghan Gibson. Gibson added a pair of free throws at the 15:55 mark that helped provide the Tigers with an eight-point edge.
The Golden Knights (4-8) responded with a pair of treys from junior guard
Lynsey Timbrouck and sophomore guard
Ola Shajuyigbe to cut their deficit to four, 12-8. However, Holy Family used an 8-2 run that was capped off by yet another “three” from senior forward Christine McCollum.
It was pretty much a seven-point affair throughout most of the afternoon, although Saint Rose got to within four, 37-33, with 14:51 to play. Sophomore forward
Ali Johnson ended a 2:08 drought by both clubs with a jumper in the paint.
The Tigers, as they did all afternoon, quickly found an answer and proceeded to outscore the Golden Knights 14-6 over the next 6:27 to afford themselves a 12 point, 51-37, margin with 8:24 left. Carr and Gibson combined for 10 of the squad's 14 points during the decisive run that included consecutive long balls by Gibson. Saint Rose was unable to get closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Senior guard
Elizabeth Buckley tied her season-high with 18 points on the strength of four, 3-pointers to lead the Golden Knights. Timbrouck also reached double-figures for the fourth time this season with 10 points.
Carr led all scorers with 21 points coupled with eight rebounds to pace three double-digit scorers for Holy Family. Gibson added 15 points, while junior forward Lindsey Tennett contributed 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench.
Up next, Saint Rose gets back to Northeast-10 Conference action with a 5:30 pm date against visiting Saint Michael's in the first half of a league doubleheader on Wednesday. Holy Family resumes its Central Collegiate Athletic Conference (CACC) schedule Tuesday night when it heads to University of the Sciences for a 6:00 pm league date.
