SAINT ROSE TURNS UP DEFENSE AT SAINT ANSELM

Sophomore guard Ashley Rath led Saint Rose in scoring for the eighth time this season with 14 points
MANCHESTER, NH – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team held host Saint Anselm College to 29.3 percent (12-for-41) shooting en route to a 57-38 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Hawks at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium this afternoon. The Golden Knights (7-9/6-5 NE-10), who won for the third time in four outings, registered their best defensive outing since the 2003-04 season-opener when they held Bloomfield College to just 33 points at the Brooklyn Pickle Tip-off Classic.

Saint Rose was initially held scoreless throughout the first three minutes of the game as Saint Anselm (6-10/3-8 NE-10) raced out to a 7-0 lead. Senior guard Erin Higgins got things going with a 3-pointer, while senior forward Courtney May added a layup and a pair of free throws to key the early run.

The Golden Knights quickly regained their composure by outscoring the Hawks 31-12 over the final 16:24 to go up 12, 31-19, at the break. Saint Rose shot a season-high 54.2 percent (13-for-24) from the floor during the first period and limited Saint Anselm to just six field goals (6-for-24) to assume control.

The second half began the same way the opening 20 minutes ended for the Golden Knights. Junior forward Amy Voelkel buried a trey and senior guard Elizabeth Buckley converted a feed from sophomore forward Ali Johnson to boost the Saint Rose margin to 17, 36-19. Following a deep ball at the other end by Higgins, Johnson finished in the paint and junior guard Lynsey Timbrouck sunk a pair of free throws that afforded the Golden Knights their largest lead of the afternoon, 40-22, with 16:48 left.

Saint Anselm was unable to get its deficit under double-digits the rest of the way. The Hawks were also plagued by 21 turnovers that Saint Rose converted into 25 points and managed only six more field goals in the second stanza.

Sophomore guard Ashley Rath paced the Golden Knights, who had 10 players find the scoring column, with 14 points. Voelkel contributed 10 points and nine rebounds, while Timbrouck filled up the box score with eight points, five assists and a career-high tying six steals.

Higgins knocked down three trifectas to finish with nine points to lead Saint Anselm.

Up next, Saint Rose completes a two-game road trip Wednesday night when the Golden Knights visit Merrimack College for a 5:30 pm league game in North Andover, MA. Saint Anselm remains home Wednesday evening as the Hawks welcome Southern Connecticut State University for a 5:30 pm NE-10 affair.
