GOLDEN KNIGHTS STUMBLE IN 75-70 LOSS TO SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Sophomore forward Brian Hanuschak recorded his fifth "double-double" of the year behind 19 points and 11 rebounds while chalking up a career-high five blocks
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team had its three-game win streak snapped as visiting Southern New Hampshire University came away with a 75-70 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Golden Knights this evening at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Penmen (9-6/4-6 NE-10) outscored Saint Rose (9-6/6-4 NE-10) 48-22 in the paint and shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) throughout the final 20 minutes to win for the sixth time in eight outings.

The Golden Knights did not help their cause by coughing up the ball 20 times, which Southern New Hampshire turned into 20 points. The Penmen also generated 14 more shot attempts than Saint Rose thanks to a 14-7 margin on the offensive glass that helped produce a 15-8 advantage in second chance points.

It appeared Southern New Hampshire was going to put things away early in the second half when the Penmen began the period with a 16-6 run to open up their largest lead of the game, 43-29, with 14:24 on the clock. Junior forward Cory Vejraska keyed the outburst with a layup, while freshman guard Josh Last punctuated things with a steal that led to a fastbreak bucket on the other end.

The Golden Knights still trailed by 12, 50-38, with 11:46 remaining when sophomore guard Shea Bromirski singlehandedly cut the deficit to five following three consecutive treys. The final bomb got Saint Rose to within, 52-47, and two minutes later sophomore forward Brian Hanuschak converted a pair of free throws to pull the Golden Knights to within four, 57-53.

It was as close as the Golden Knights could get the rest of the way. Southern New Hampshire made the most of its opportunities from the foul line over the final 6:51 by knocking down 10-of-15 attempts to chalk up its first win in Albany since 2001. The Golden Knights also lost at home for just the second time this season (7-2).

Hanuschak and Bromirski finished with 19 points apiece to lead Saint Rose. Hanuschak wound up with his fifth “double-double” of the year after hauling in 11 rebounds to go with a career-high five blocks. Freshman guard Andre Pope tossed in 16 points and handed out four assists in just 25 minutes of action.

Four players reached double-figures in scoring for the Penmen. Stapleton's 20 point, 12 rebound effort marked his sixth “double-double” of the season. Senior guard Stephen Wood added 14 points, while sophomore guard Josh Morgan-Green and Vejraska contributed 12 and 10 points.

Up ahead, the Golden Knights are scheduled to hit the road for a 3:30 pm league game at Saint Anselm College Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, Southern New Hampshire returns home for a 3:30 pm NE-10 affair versus Le Moyne College on Sunday.
