SAINT ROSE OPENS NE-10 ACTION ON A POSITIVE NOTE

Junior middle hitter Kelly Ryan (left) and sophomore setter Theresa Staulo both played key roles in tonight's victory at Assumption.
WORCESTER, MA – The College of Saint Rose opened the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference portion of its schedule on a positive note with a 3-0 defeat of host Assumption this evening. The Golden Knights (9-3/1-0 NE-10) won the opening set 25-15 and then took the final two by respective scores of 25-21 and 25-13.

Saint Rose used a balanced attack as sophomore outside hitters Marilyn Glamack and Sarah Kahrs, and junior middle hitter Kelly Ryan recorded seven kills apiece. Senior right side hitter Jaclyn Griffin  added five kills. Furthermore, sophomore setter Theresa Staulo managed the offense to the tune of 25 assists and senior libero Mary German spearheaded the defensive effort with 14 digs.

For Assumption (1-7/0-1 NE-10), junior middle hitter Aimee Drainville had a team-high four kills, while freshman libero Steph Wooten came up with 15 digs on the backline.

The Golden Knights seized momentum from the get-go by jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the opener following kills from Kahrs and sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Tyler. Assumption then rallied from a 20-11 deficit in the second set to get to within 23-20. However, a service error and a block by Staulo and Ryan afforded Saint Rose a 2-0 advantage in games. In the finale, the Golden Knights strung together a 10-2 spurt that transformed a 13-8 lead into a 23-10 cushion. Two consecutive service aces from Staulo and a kill by Glamack capped the run.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights return home Friday to host defending conference champion New Haven. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds have a 2:00 pm home match Sunday against NE-10 rival Pace.
