SAINT ROSE FALLS 3-2 IN FIVE SETS

Junior middle hitter Kelly Ryan contributed nine kills and six blocks this afternoon
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team suffered its third straight setback, falling 3-2 (25-16, 24-26, 14-25, 25-16, 9-15) against visiting C.W. Post this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (8-3) led only once throughout the deciding fifth set as the Pioneers (5-7) tallied the final five points to secure the victory.

Saint Rose senior right side hitter Jaclyn Griffin finished with a season-high 11 kills to go with a .304 hitting percentage and two blocks to lead the offense. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Kahrs also reached double-figures in kills for the fifth time this year with 10 while adding seven digs and an ace.

Senior libero Mary German spearheaded the defensive effort for the Golden Knights with 20 digs. Additionally, sophomore setter Theresa Staulo contributed 41 assists and junior middle hitter Kelly Ryan added nine kills and six blocks.

C.W. Post junior setter Amanda Ostapow wound up with a rare “triple-double” via 33 assists, 10 digs and 10 kills to pace the Pioneers. Meanwhile, junior outside hitter Marilena Guadagnini led all players with 16 kills.

The first set saw Saint Rose go on a 9-2 jaunt to close out a 25-16 triumph. Ryan snapped a 14-14 tie with a kill, added another following a C.W. Post attack error, before freshman defensive specialist Nikki Robitaille and sophomore outside hitter Marilyn Glamack served up three aces to put the Golden Knights in control.

The second and third sets went the Pioneers way. Guadagnini broke a 24-24 tie with a kill, which preceded another kill by junior hitter Lauren Brown to cap a 26-24 win. C.W. Post grabbed that momentum and jumped out to a 12-4 edge in the third set and never looked back.

Saint Rose managed to pull even behind a convincing 25-16 victory in the fourth set on the strength of a .406 hitting percentage. Griffin recorded five kills in six attempts and the Golden Knights forced five attack errors as well. However, the Pioneers diffused any attempt at a Saint Rose comeback in the fifth set by outscoring the Golden Knights 5-0 after Kahrs had made it a 10-9 affair.

Saint Rose will play its Northeast-10 Conference opener Wednesday night when they travel to Assumption College for a 7:00 pm match in Worcester, MA. C.W. Post is expected to close out its five-match road trip Tuesday when the Pioneers visit East Coast Conference rival Queens College for a 7:00 pm date in Flushing.
