ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose surrendered a pair of goals within the opening 10 minutes that allowed visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack to chalk up a 2-0 victory this afternoon at The Albany Academies. The Warriors (3-2-1/1-0-0 NE-10) outshot the Golden Knights 7-2 in the first half, but Saint Rose (2-5-0/1-2-0 NE-10) generated a 9-6 shot advantage throughout the second stanza. Both squads took five corner kicks.
Saint Rose sophomore keeper
Patrik Ohlsson and Merrimack senior Doug Carvalho made five saves apiece between the posts.
Sophomore forward Robbie Sabadoz tallied both markers for Merrimack. Sabadoz collected a feed from freshman forward Olof Lindhe on the right flank and fired a shot that found its way inside the far post at the 5:51 mark. Less than two minutes later, Sabadoz took advantage of a Saint Rose defensive breakdown in the box by sending home a loose ball into an empty net.
The Golden Knights regained their composure in the second half and generated a pair of opportunities that could have tied the game. Junior midfielder
Liam Barrett ripped a shot from the top the box the sailed wide left in the 71st minute. Six minutes later, senior midfielder
Justin Paden made a run into the box and headed a cross that ricocheted off the crossbar to sum up his teams' fortunes.
Merrimack had a pair of outstanding threats as well. Sabadoz collected a long through ball behind the Saint Rose defense and walked in alone in the 63rd minute, but was subsequently denied by Ohlsson. Lindhe then flicked a header on a ball from Sabadoz that flew over the goal in the 68th minute.
Up next, Saint Rose steps out of conference Thursday when it welcomes Saint Thomas Aquinas for a 4:00 pm match at the University at Albany. The Warriors have two days to prepare for Tuesday's 4:00 pm conference match at Stonehill in Easton, MA.
