Amanda Deck drove home a free kick from beyond the 18-yard box with 1:04 remaining in regulation to lift The College of Saint Rose to a 2-1 victory against host Georgian Court University in the latter's own tournament this afternoon.
The Golden Knights (1-0), ranked #4 in the
NSCAA/Adidas Division II preseason poll, outshot the Lions (0-1) by a 14-6 margin, 7-3 in each half, and generated three corner kicks, while yielding only one. Sophomore keeper
Susan Cowan made a pair of saves throughout the opening 69:01 to register the victory in her collegiate debut. Junior keeper
Deanna Esposito was not called upon to stop a shot after relieving Cowan for the final 20:59.
Saint Rose held a 1-0 lead at intermission thanks to junior back
Kelly Guerin who chipped in a shot from the midfield circle at the 26:40 mark. Georgian Court squared the match 1-1 with 13 minutes elapsed in the second period when freshman midfielder Taylor Reinecke converted a feed from sophomore midfielder Alanna Carr. Georgian Court senior keeper Lindsay Hammond kept the Lions within striking distance by registering six saves.
Saint Rose will conclude play in the Georgian Court Tournament tomorrow with a 4:00 pm match versus Holy Family University. Meanwhile, the host Lions will take on Stonehill College at 1:00 pm.
