ROTTERDAM, NY – The College of Saint Rose dropped both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against visiting Bentley University this afternoon at Esposito Field. The Golden Knights (8-16/2-10 NE-10) fell 4-1 in the opener, and suffered a 7-0 setback in the nightcap.
Senior right-hander
Nicole Welch hurled 5.1 innings of no-hit ball in the first game, but the Falcons (12-8/5-3 NE-10) broke through with three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh after Saint Rose had taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth. Welch allowed three earned runs on four hits and fanned seven over the distance.
Sophomore right fielder
Megan Rios went 2-for-3 and drove in the lone Saint Rose run with a base hit. Senior left fielder
Kerry Monahan finished 2-for-3 as well, while senior first baseman
Katie Wiemann doubled and scored off of Monahan's single.
For Bentley, senior shortstop Alex Hitchcock smacked a three-run homer over the left-center field fence to account for the damage in the sixth. Sophomore left fielder Maitlyn Kraft then doubled to lead off the seventh, went to third on a passed ball and crossed home via a ground out by senior catcher Jenna Crowell.
In the finale, the Golden Knights put only one runner in scoring position as Bentley junior right-hander Ashley Messina scattered five hits and faced just four batters above the minimum to run her record to 6-4 on the year. Rios went 2-for-3 to pace the Saint Rose charge.
Bentley took a 3-0 lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Hitchcock and a two-run single off the bat of sophomore second baseman Christine D'Amico. The Falcons broke it open with four more runs in the seventh. D'Amico provided the biggest blow with a three-run blast that gave her five RBI for the game.
Saint Rose returns to action Wednesday with a 5:00 pm home doubleheader versus conference rival Le Moyne. Meanwhile, Bentley is scheduled host NE-10 foe Stonehill at 3:00 pm Tuesday.
