COLCHESTER, VT – The College of Saint Rose softball team belted a pair of home runs to take a 7-2 Northeast-10 Conference victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Saint Michael's College this evening. However, the host Purple Knights (5-21/1-15 NE-10) snapped a 15-game skid via a two-out single in the fourth inning en route to a 2-1 triumph in the opener.
In game one, Saint Michael's senior Megan O'Connor tossed a complete game, fanning two and walking none to help the Purple Knights earn their first league win of the season. Furthermore, O'Connor got Saint Michael's on the board with a double in the bottom of the first, plating classmate Ashley Harkins who led off the inning with a single.
The Golden Knights (7-19/3-13 NE-10) tied things at 1-1 in the fourth when senior left fielder
Kerry Monahan singled and scored on an error. Saint Michael's answered with the game-winner in the bottom half thanks to a two-out single by junior first baseman Lindsay Bernard.
Sophomore right-hander
Nicole Traylor went the distance for Saint Rose, fanning four and walking none along the way. Freshman right fielder
Jessica Butterbrodt went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while Monahan finished 1-for-3.
In game two, Monahan and senior first baseman
Katie Wiemann each belted two-run home runs in the fourth inning to snap a scoreless tie. That proved to be enough support for senior right-hander
Nicole Welch, who allowed just six hits and two runs (one earned) while fanning six.
Also for the Golden Knights, junior catcher
Amanda Morano doubled, singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in a run to help Saint Rose end a 13-game skid of its own.
The Golden Knights are back on the road tomorrow when they travel to Stonehill College for a 3:00 pm league doubleheader. Meanwhile, Saint Michael's is scheduled to head to Bentley University for a 3:30 pm NE-10 twin-bill Thursday afternoon.
