ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's tennis team suffered its eighth consecutive setback this afternoon as visiting Assumption College (3-2/3-1 NE-10) handed the Golden Knights an 8-1 loss in a Northeast-10 Conference match at the University at Albany.
Sophomore Melissa Leighton rallied from a 0-6 first set to upend freshman Samantha Jean 6-3, 10-8 in the second singles flight for Saint Rose (2-10/1-5 NE-10). Leighton nearly pulled off a perfect afternoon, but Jean teamed up with classmate Marissa Charles to deliver a 9-8 (7-4) triumph in first doubles action for the Greyhounds. Ericia Edwards suffered a hard luck loss to junior Caitlin Harvey at No. 6 singles. Harvey took game one 6-1, but Edwards bounced back for a 6-0 decision in game two. However, Harvey squeaked by with a 16-14 win in a tiebreaker to secure the victory.
Saint Rose has a pair of NE-10 matches on tap this weekend. The Golden Knights will travel to American International College for a 1:00 pm league affair in Springfield, MA Saturday afternoon before returning home to host Merrimack College at 12:00 pm Sunday. Assumption is scheduled to welcome Southern New Hampshire University at 1:00 pm Saturday for its 2008-09 home opener.
