KISSIMMEE, FL – The College of Saint Rose softball team was held winless for the first time this week at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL as Minnesota State Mankato upended the Golden Knights, 7-0, this afternoon. Saint Rose was then outlasted by Dowling College, which took a slim 2-1 triumph in the day's second game.
In the opener, the Mavericks (15-3) pushed their win streak to 14 games by bunching together six of their seven runs after the third inning. Meanwhile, Minnesota State freshman right-hander Kendra Huettl kept the Saint Rose (3-3) batters in check by scattering four singles to earn the complete game shutout.
Sophomore designated player
Alyssa Farrell continued her hot streak at the plate with a single. Junior catcher
Amanda Morano, junior third baseman
Lauren Ruggerio and freshman infielder
Kayla Kuilema each added base hits for the Golden Knights as well.
In game two, Saint Rose got on the board in its first at-bat when Farrell set the table with a leadoff double. Morano then followed with an RBI single to put the Golden Knights in front 1-0. However, Dowling sophomore Katie Cameron settled down and allowed only two hits the rest of the way and the Golden Lions used a long ball in the fourth to hand Chesebrough her first setback of 2009.
Chesebrough (2-1) issued a leadoff walk to begin the third. Dowling then took advantage of two passed balls and a wild pitch to even things 1-1. Chesebrough reached back and struck out the side following the game-tying run that allowed Saint Rose to escape with little damage.
In the bottom of the fourth, senior Jackie Hannan provided the final blow with a home run and the Golden Lions never trailed again. Regardless, Chesebrough recorded twin-figure strikeout totals for the third straight game after fanning 13 batters in the contest.
The Golden Knights waste no time returning to action with a pair of games on tap tomorrow morning. Saint Rose will meet Indianapolis at 9:00 am before entertaining Quincy at 11:00 am.
