COLCHESTER, VT –
Brian Beaury became just the ninth active head coach, and 34th overall, at the NCAA Division II level to ascend the 500-win plateau by virtue of tonight's 70-52 victory at Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Michael's. Beaury, now in his 23rd season at the helm of his alma mater, has led The College of Saint Rose to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances within the past 17 years. He owns a 500-200 career record.
Saint Rose put its mentor in elite company by holding the Purple Knights (7-12/5-12 NE-10) to 35.1 percent (20-for-57) shooting, including 25.9 percent (7-for-27) in the second half, and forcing them into 23 turnovers. The Golden Knights conversely shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) from the floor and coughed up the ball a mere 11 times, while generating a 40-16 scoring advantage in the paint.
Freshman guard
Shea Bromirski came off the pine for 22 minutes and scored 11 of his game-high 18 points after halftime to lead Saint Rose to its third straight win. Junior guard
Jermaine Clark reached twin-figures for the eighth straight game with 12 points and a career-high seven assists. Junior forward
Malcolm Williams had 10 points, via 5-for-7 shooting, and six rebounds; while senior center
Evan Lane wound up with eight points, eight boards and four blocks.
The Golden Knights (10-11/8-8 NE-10) were up five, 49-44, with 11:09 remaining when they took control by holding Saint Michael's scoreless throughout the next five minutes. The end result was a 16 point, 60-44, advantage with 6:33 to go following a Bromirski 3-pointer and back-to-back layups by junior guard
Brian Ledbetter.
Saint Michael's got it back to within 11, 60-49, via a 5-0 spurt; but Clark nailed a jumper to ignite a 10-0 run that made it a 70-49 affair in the final two minutes.
Freshman forward Tyler Schilling recorded a “double-double' behind 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead Saint Michael's, which fell for only the fourth time in 11 games at home this year. Senior forward Jon Zylstra had a team-high 14 points to go with six boards and three assists, while sophomore guard Nate Birr wound up with 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
Both teams get back on the floor this weekend. The Golden Knights return home Saturday to face Saint Anselm at 1:30 pm. It will be a “Think Pink” celebration with all monies collected at the gate going towards the fight against cancer. Meanwhile, Saint Michael's has a 1:30 pm date Sunday at Pace University in Pleasantville.
