ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose allowed a 10 point lead late in the first half to slip away in a 55-45 Northeast-10 Conference loss to visiting New Haven tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Chargers (5-1/4-0 NE-10) have now won three straight to remain unbeaten in league play.
Neither team shot particularly well although the Golden Knights (3-3/2-3 NE-10) were the bigger culprits. Saint Rose buried 28.3 percent (17-for-60) of its attempts from the floor, including 11.8 percent (2-for-17) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, New Haven converted just 34.7 percent (17-for-49) of its field goal attempts. The two teams also combined for 41 turnovers.
Senior guard
Elizabeth Buckley had a season-high 18 points to pace Saint Rose. Meanwhile, freshman forward
Emily Trapp registered season-highs of nine points and nine rebounds throughout 20 minutes of reserve duty.
The Golden Knights put themselves in a comfortable position by scoring 10 unanswered points that transformed a 12-12 deadlock into a 22-12 lead with 3:17 to go until intermission. However, New Haven responded by scoring seven of the period's final nine points to make it a 24-19 ballgame at the break.
The Chargers then took over where they left off at the outset of the second half behind an 8-0 spurt that put them up 27-24, before sophomore guard
Ashley Rath finished a fast break that afforded the game its fourth and final tie at 27-27.
However, a jumper by junior guard Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty put the Chargers up for good at 29-27 with 15:56 left. Saint Rose twice cut its deficit to a point, but New Haven answered each time and went 9-for-10 from the foul line throughout the final 1:05 to seal the victory.
Senior guard Helin Marte led the Chargers with 15 points, while freshman center Jill Baranger finished with 12 points and eight boards.
Up next, both teams have 1:30 pm conference road dates Saturday. Saint Rose will visit Southern Connecticut State, while New Haven is scheduled to meet Pace University.
