SAINT ROSE SPOILS HOME OPENER AT ADELPHI

Junior forward Amy Voelkel filled up the box score with nine points, eight boards, six assists and three blocks tonight
GARDEN CITY, NY – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team outscored host Adelphi University 16-4 throughout an eight minute span in the second half to solidify a 63-51 Northeast-10 Conference victory at the Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City, NY this evening.

The Golden Knights (3-1/2-1 NE-10) outrebounded Adelphi 46-25 in the contest and limited the Panthers (0-3/0-2 NE-10) to just 26.7 percent (8-for-30) shooting throughout the final 20 minutes to win their second straight league contest.

Sophomore guard Ashley Rath led the Saint Rose scoring parade for the third time in four games with 22 points. Meanwhile, sophomore forward Ali Johnson added 12 points, four rebounds and three blocks and junior forward Amy Voelkel contributed nine points, eight boards, six assists and three blocks.

Sophomore forward Theresa Foley and junior forward Ashley Caiafa combined for 32 of Adelphi's 51 total points. Foley had 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor, while Caiafa finished with 14 points despite a 4-of-17 performance from the field.

The Golden Knights walked into the locker room with a 34-31 edge at the break. After a Caiafa layup cut the Panthers deficit to two, 39-37, with 15:20 remaining in the game, Saint Rose embarked on a decisive 16-4 run that covered an eight-minute span that gave the Golden Knights a comfortable 55-43 margin. Johnson and Rath combined for all 16 points during the jaunt as a Rath 3-pointer capped things off at the 7:04 mark.

Adelphi managed to get to within seven, 58-51, with 1:14 left, but Saint Rose went 5-for-6 from the stripe and held the Panthers without a field goal the rest of the way for the final margin.

The Golden Knights are idle through the holiday break, but return to action Sunday afternoon when they host Pace University in a 1:30 pm tip-off at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Adelphi will go in search of its first win of the 2009-10 campaign when the Panthers hit the road Sunday for a 1:30 pm league contest at Assumption College in Worcester, MA.
