WORCESTER, MA – Host Assumption overcame 28 turnovers by shooting 55.6 percent (20-for-36) from the floor to hand The College of Saint Rose a 64-58 setback in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both clubs tonight at Laska Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Elizabeth Buckley finished with a team-high 11 points and junior forward
Amy Voelkel had 10 points and five rebounds to lead the Golden Knights (1-1/0-1 NE-10).
The first half featured seven ties and as many lead changes although Saint Rose was up by five with 2:23 left after junior forward
Liz Tremblay hit a jumper. A 3-pointer by freshman guard Gabrielle Gibson cut Assumption's deficit to two at the break and another Gibson trey at the outset of the second period put the Greyhounds ahead to stay.
It was either a one or two possession game the rest of the way. However, the Golden Knights went 2-for-7 from the foul line throughout the final five minutes and Assumption shot 8-for-11 from the stripe during that stretch to seal the victory.
Tremblay added a career-high eight points, on 4-for-4 shooting, in 10 minutes off the bench and sophomore forward
Ali Johnson finished with nine points and three rebounds to help the Saint Rose cause.
Freshman guard Katy Howard led the Greyhounds (1-0/1-0 NE-10) with 18 points and junior guard Molly Griffiths wound up with 12 points and five rebounds. Gibson finished with 11 points, nine boards and three assists.
Up next, Saint Rose returns home Saturday to host American International in the first half of an NE-10 doubleheader. Tip-off is set for 1:30 pm. Meanwhile, Assumption has a 7:30 pm non-conference home date Friday versus Felician as part of the
Marriott Courtyard Classic.
