SYRACUSE – The College of Saint Rose put the finishing touches on an unblemished regular-season with a 3-0 victory at Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne today. The Golden Knights (18-0-0/15-0-0 NE-10), ranked #2 for the fourth consecutive week in the most recent
NSCAA/Adidas Division II Poll, scored two goals eight minutes apart in the first half and added another midway through the second stanza.
Saint Rose outshot Le Moyne (10-7-2/6-7-2 NE-10) by a 23-9 margin, including 13-3 prior to intermission, and had five corner kicks as opposed to a pair for the Dolphins.
Junior midfielder
Amanda Deck scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year in the 63rd minute and set up both strikes in the first half. Sophomore forward
Derith Fernandes came up with what proved to be the game-winner with 31:19 elapsed when she gathered a feed from Deck and finished from eight-yards out.
Deck then delivered a strike from close range that Le Moyne sophomore keeper Melissa Stevens could not hang on to. Junior midfielder
Kristen Bidosky made the most of the misplay by pouncing on the rebound for a 2-0 Golden Knights advantage.
Between the posts, sophomore keeper
Susan Cowan turned aside one shot-on-target throughout the opening 74 minutes en route to her 10th victory of the year. Senior
Shannon Murphy was then called upon to make one save during the final 16 minutes. Stevens recorded three saves prior to halftime and freshman Kelsey McGee came up with a pair of saves in the second period for Le Moyne.
Saint Rose now heads into the postseason with an impressive resume. The Golden Knights have shutout 11 of their last 12 opponents, including six straight, and have surrendered a mere four goals all year, none in the first half. They furthermore lowered their nation's second best (NCAA II) goals-against-average to 0.22 following today's clean sheet and are one of only two (West Florida) unbeaten or untied teams. Offensively, nine different players have accounted for their 11 goals throughout the last three contests.
Furthermore, Saint Rose is only the eighth women's soccer squad to finish conference play with an undefeated season. The last to accomplish the feat was Franklin Pierce in 2001 (14-0-0). The Golden Knights have also set an NE-10 record with 15 conference victories due to the league's expansion within the last year.
Saint Rose is scheduled to host an NE-10 quarterfinal match this Sunday, November 1 against a yet to be determined opponent. Le Moyne is on the bubble for the eighth and final playoff spot with three other NE-10 games scheduled for tonight and another for tomorrow.
