ALBANY – Queens College scored the game's lone goal with less than four minutes remaining to spoil “Senior Day” for The College of Saint Rose this afternoon. Freshman forward Daniel Stoker headed home a cross off the right flank from sophomore midfielder Jose Aguije with 86:56 elapsed to hand the Golden Knights their sixth one-goal setback of the season.
Queens (10-6-0), which has won three of its last four, outshot Saint Rose by a 15-1 margin and generated five corner kicks, while giving up only one to the Golden Knights (2-14-1). Sophomore keeper
Patrik Ohlsson turned away five shots-on-goal, while Queens junior Julio Rodriguez was not called upon to make a save.
Queens had a chance in each period to afford itself some breathing room, but Ohlsson was up to the test on both occasions. Junior midfielder Elhadji Mbow dribbled in alone on the right wing, before being denied by Ohlsson in the 25th minute. Ohlsson then dove to his right to deflect a low screamer from 35-yards out off the foot of Aguije in the 82nd minute. Four minutes later however, Aguije found Stoker who subsequently delivered his team-leading ninth marker of the season.
Prior to the opening kickoff, seven Saint Rose seniors were honored during a brief ceremony. The group included backs
Michael Alvarez and
Scott Couch, along with midfielders
Justin Rogers,
Steven Paese,
Justin Paden,
Gavin DuGuay and
Robert Caserta.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns to action Tuesday when the Golden Knights host league rival Le Moyne for their 2009 regular-season finale. Kickoff is set for 4:00 pm at the University at Albany. Meanwhile, Queens travels to Mercy College Wednesday for a 3:00 pm East Coast Conference date in Dobbs Ferry.
