LOWELL, MA – Host UMass Lowell scored twice within a 2:14 span in the second half to snap a season-long nine game losing streak in a 2-0 Northeast-10 Conference win over The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team this afternoon in Lowell. It also kept the Golden Knights (2-13-1/1-10-1 NE-10) winless in their last 10 outings.
Freshman midfielder Ryan McLeod provided the difference for the River Hawks (4-11/3-9 NE-10) with the first and second strikes of his collegiate career. McLeod fired a shot that found the lower right corner at the 76:50 mark and then slipped another inside the left post at 79:04 to quickly erase any hopes of a Saint Rose equalizer.
The Golden Knights, who were outshot by a 27-15 margin, nearly took a 1-0 lead of their own in the 66th minute. Junior forward
Justin Little ripped a shot that hit the post and the rebound was cleared away from danger to keep things scoreless.
Sophomore keeper
Patrik Ohlsson, the NE-10 leader in saves, continued to add to his season totals by coming up with nine stops to keep Saint Rose alive. Meanwhile, senior keeper Ryan Richards came away with his second shutout of the year behind three saves.
The Golden Knights have a short turnaround before returning to the pitch. Saint Rose is scheduled to host Queens College at 1:00 pm tomorrow in its final non-conference match of the regular season. UMass Lowell closes out its 2009 slate Wednesday night when the River Hawks head to Merrimack College for a 7:00 pm league contest.
